A great makeover

Different title, different name on the cover. But they're the same book. Which do you prefer, the 1979 or the 2006 version?

For a synopsis, see Amazon. (Yes, I own copies of both.)

  1. I'd be much more likely to pick up the bottom picture, though the synopsis on Amazon seems to suit the top picture better. (Not at all sure what that means!)

  2. I sort of like the older cover better. The newer one seems to be a little too generic, and as Carla says, the first one gives a better idea of the contents.

I wonder if this means that some of Brenda Clarke/Brenda Honeyman's other novels might be reissued.

  3. It would be nice if they were! This is the only one of hers I've seen reissued so far.

I like "The Lofty Banners" much better, both the title and the cover illustration. The new title/cover make it look like military fiction to me.

  5. I'd pick up the first cover. The second cover looks like an amateur photoshop job--very generic.

  6. You guys always surprise me, which is a good thing. I didn't think clinch covers were popular with the online romance set, even, so I didn't guess that a cover of that type would be preferred over a more historical-looking one. Even if it is pretty generic.

  7. First cover and first title, definitely!

  8. Like Cinderella said, the second cover looks like a military historical, while the first cover looks like what the book is--a swashbuckling romantic historical.

I come from the romance community and I don't dislike covers with an embracing coup, I dislike clinch covers. The first cover shows that there is a romance between the pages, but it doesn't make it seem as though the focus is on the sexual side of the romantic relationship--that is what a clinch cover does.

  9. I like the bottom one. It seems to focus more on the history than the romance, and as a history buff, that appeals to me more.

But since I haven't read the book, I don't know which one matches better, and so I am therefore rambling. :)

  10. Definitely the top one. The bottom one looks like a couple of factual books I have on war and battles using re-enactment pics for illustration. I'd think it was a reference work aimed at the popular market. The top one says 'full-blooded historical drama.' Bottom one says 'yawn.'
